THE ABERRATION is a disturbing story that chronicles the near dissolution of Karcher and Witte's young marriage by an unethical female psychiatrist in Portland who seduces Karcher through hypnotherapy. Emotionally crippled by alcoholic parents, a parade of nannies who doubled as his mother's lovers, and the suicide of his masculine mother, Karcher is an easy mark. Within weeks, the doctor has him hooked and so confused, he believes his wife is the one who controls him. But there is always hope. The book is buoyed by narrator Karcher's unsteady progress toward reconciliation --with his deceased mother, his wife and himself -- and by the firm grounding provided him by his centered wife and her Maine parents.
The Aberration edition by Kevin Sheehan Literature Fiction eBooks
"The Aberration" is the story of a young couple struggling to find their way to an understanding and connection that goes deeper than the physical. Their journey is made challenging not only by the freight-load of baggage Karcher carries, but also his sensitivity and susceptibility to manipulation. Witte proves a good foil to him, with her solid parents, firm practicality, and sense of humor.Kevin Sheehan's language is beautiful and evocative, making parts of the story painfully real at times, but also very easily imagined. His description of Maine is equally lovely, painting a clear picture of their surroundings and drawing the reader in. I found myself firmly in Karcher's world, and while that world has much tragedy, it also has moments of delight, and I was rooting for him all the way.

The Aberration edition by Kevin Sheehan Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
"The Aberration" is a tale of a young man who carries horrifying, unfinished childhood business with him into adulthood, and ultimately, into his marriage. Kevin Sheehan delivers this story eloquently, with a refreshing flair of humor and cynicism that touches every emotion.
Kevin Sheehan's poetic and dark story of stalled love investigates a series of relationships gone wrong. Sheehan's writing is skilled and visually stimulating, with each carefully crafted sentence offering lyrical insight into the protagonist's (Karcher) disturbing and fascinating past. Despite Karcher's backstory, his sex problems, his disastrous foray into the clutches of a needy psychotherapist, and a wife who seems one step away from imploding, there's a glimmer of hope for him in the dark Maine woods. A story of betrayal, resilience, depression, and love.
This story made me both laugh and cry. And so often this author uses just the right word, making it a pleasure to read.
Kevin Sheehan weaves a tale of love, betrayal, and lingering shadows which makes for a surprising portrait of a young mid-century couple. Sheehan masterfully paints a portrait of a troubled young man at times teetering on the edges of sanity for whom the love of the quirky , statuesque, and steadfast Witte brings something both reliable and revelatory. Sheehan creates in Karcher an alternate dream world which takes the form of all things mechanical. He infuses this love with an animism that serves as both refuge and silent form of worship.
Karcher stumbles through his own painful awareness and fears with an underlying strength, while navigating the young relationship with Witte. He brings to it all a combination of humor and tenderness. Witte's attraction for her husband is palpable, and whether dancing through the kitchen or chopping wood she does so with a gravity that is somehow airy and light. The ghosts of Karcher's past never quite leave him, and occupy their present forms. But while he suffers, he never loses sight of the love he has for the new family he has created. Sheehan is quite adept at exploring the details and depths he encounters in sharing the fullness of a passionate life with Witte. Set against the constancy of the Maine landscape, The Aberration is a worthy tale of the eternal dilemmas of married life told with humility and skill by Kevin Sheehan.
“The Aberration” by Kevin Sheehan is the story of a young married couple, and it is also the story of Maine, the 60s and how Witte Murch and Karcher Stickney are impacted by time and place. Their struggle is not uncommon how do two good people come to understand each other? This couple wants to find a life together in spite of their attachments to the past and the social chaos of their present. It is not easy.
Karcher Stickney has inherited family property; he has a college degree, but he is emotionally handicapped by growing up with a domineering mother. Early in the novel, Karcher succinctly states his own dilemma his mother and his new wife “had taken command of his soul.” Karcher’s wife, Witte Murch is a product of Maine; she is full of independent ideas, but lacking a larger frame of reference. She’s smart and funny —as her name implies, but stuck in the limited aspirations of her own mother. When she lets herself, Witte can speak the truth as when she says, “You don’t fool me one bit, Karcher. There’s something’ else goin’ on.”
Kevin Sheehan is an accomplished writer. He knows how to use language to create interesting and lovable characters. Mr. Sheehan employs his broad vocabulary to describe Karcher’s attachment to “antique one-cylinder stationary engines” and on occasion his dialogue replicates a Downeast accent. “The Aberration” is filled with good humor and laugh out loud moments. It is, however, his ability to write erotically that deserves the most praise. His love scenes are sweet, tender, and memorable.
Karcher Stickney is not the first man to be caught between his mother and his wife; Witte Murch is not the first woman who needs to be liberated. Men and women have always had to struggle to find freedom, but “The Aberration” suggests that with intelligence and imagination comes hope for them and us all —and it is a great read.
